Reading Time: 7 minutes

In this beefy blog post I will go over lessons learned from 6 years in business, plus how much I made, what worked, what didn’t, and what it taught me!

WHAT WORKED

This year was all about discomfort for the sake of my mental health and constantly adjusting my schedule to figure out childcare/ work-life balance. What did that look like practically?

  1. THERAPY ONCE A WEEK! This has helped me really dig in to my neurodivergent brain which has helped me figure out some tools for working in my business without overwhelm.
  2. Running 30-40 miles a week. This may sound CRAZY to some, but I used to be a marathoner who ran 60-80 mile weeks so this is a big decrease for me. However in this season, this is what’s practical for me.
  3. Increasing daycare. Initially I thought I would be a SAHM who worked during nap time. Then I decided no way can I sustain a business much less grow it, so I put my daughter in daycare once a week. Now I have childcare 2 – 3 days a week for my 2 toddlers and honestly I am reevaluating again for 2025 to potentially increase that for my mental health.

I believe in setting quarterly business goals (or launches) and then centering your content around that launch to PRIME your audience. Overall I think this worked well, however next year I would like to be more strategic with my blog/ YouTube content instead of just posting whatever I want/ gets asked of me.

WHAT DIDN’T WORK

I tried in 2024 approaching content creation differently and having my courses on evergreen instead of live launching them, and spoiler alert, it didn’t work.

*NOTE if this many blogs seems overwhelming to you, don’t think you need to do this in order to have good SEO. I ENJOY content creation so writing 56 blog posts/ YouTube videos in 11 months (48 weeks) was fun and a creative outlet for me! You can successfully get your Squarespace or Showit website to rank on page 1 for the keyword phrases you want even if you only blog once a month!

What brought in the most money?

Definitely Website in a Week ($12,250) or Website in a Days ($9,050). I had the privilege of working with many different types of businesses including:

Below are some designs I created in 2024!

What I learned:

Next time I’m looking to spend a lot of money on my business, I will do a done-for-you service. I find these have the best ROI.

I also created a “mastermind” with a few girls which consists of an ongoing Instagram message where we do weekly check-ins and hold each other accountable. This has been SO VALUABLE this year in encouraging me to continue living out my purpose. We are doing a retreat in the beginning of February (at my parent’s retirement home in Arizona) and I can’t wait to pour into these ladies’ businesses while sitting out by the community pool!

I also need to remember that business is a rollercoaster. There will always be ups and downs. And summer is ALWAYS low with inquiries and income for many brand and web designers (myself included). Really need to remember that one.

The other thing that is always worth my money is tools that help grow my business or streamline it so I am not doing as much on the backend.

Here’s what I use to run my website design business:

Showit – Get a FREE month!

Dubsado – 20% off first year!

Flodesk Coupon Code – 50% off Flodesk (first year)!

ThriveCart – One time payment!  (Use my link to get the lifetime deal pricing on ThriveCart, including ThriveCart Learn!)

Tella – $24 off!

MacBook Air – I was always a MacBook Pro girly for web design, but I switched to a 15″ Air this year when my computer died, and I’m pleasantly surprised (The Best Computer for a New Website Designer

These are affiliate links. I make a small commission at no extra cost to you. I really appreciate it when you use them! ♡

Final Thoughts

6 Lessons Learned From 6 Years in Business

  1. If you’re feeling burnt out, hold on… you’ll miss your business in 6 months (I almost went and got a full time job in January 2023 – read more about that here)
  2. Be willing to change how much you work, even if that means less money (daycare SAVED MY LIFE and my business)
  3. Give yourself grace to not grow on social media (I grew 80% of my following from 2018-2021 I’m pretty sure and that is NOT a direct correlation of the most money I have made)
  4. The best investment you can make will *probably* be a community of DFY service, not a course
  5. Who you know is still important (especially in weird election years), even in the entrepreneurial world. Get connected
  6. There’s nothing wrong with choosing the DIY route and having slower growth

I’ve got messy hair and a thirsty heart.

I overshare my life, and have an ultra-expressive personality. Some words people use to describe me are: helpful, real, fun, creative, authentic, and kind.

Elphaba from Wicked is kind of my alter-ego as I am always trying to forge my own path and make a difference in the World, somehow, someway, while also constantly criticizing myself and trying to become the better version of me.

Quality conversations + coffee come easy to me.

I’ve never had an issue connecting naturally with others (probs because I can go on and on about my life story, not that it is interesting, I just process externally, anyone else?!)

I find so much joy in helping and serving others and I give myself fully to whatever it is that engages me, whether that is running a 50k or creating a website in a day.
