Income Report From a Lower Income Earner

Strange title for a blog post? Hear me out…

To many entrepreneurs making less than $1,500 a month would be a TERRIBLE month. If you’re starting your business, maybe you can only dream of making that much! Wherever you are at, I am simply here to share my journey and NORMALIZE ALL INCOME TYPES! And honestly? The last few months have been BRUTAL for my business…

*Note – if you want to read a great income breakdown of a higher earning solopreneur, I love Mara Kucirek’s and Madison Dearly’s income reports!

How does my business make money?

Mainly through 1 social media management client I have had FOREVER and website in a day projects, however this month I had income from being an affiliate for Paige Brunton’s Square Secrets Business course as well as the Systems and Workflow Magic Bundle SEO Addition!

I love helping other solopreneurs get their website out into the World so it can start gaining SEO traction. I do this in a few different ways: Website in a Week is a done for you option, Website in a Day is done WITH you, and my course Beyond the Template is the DIY option.

August 2024 Income: $1,439

Well… there it is… The past few months have been very low for me (see chart below). So that has been… tough… Honestly, I don’t know what to say other than this is dejecting and NOT how I expected 2024 to go… but at the same time it is an election year sooooooo….

How many hours a week do I work?

15-20 hours a week! I have childcare 3 days a week which was a GAME CHANGER for my mental health, excitement for my work, and patience with my kids.

My expenses for August

Flodesk ($20), Google workspace ($12), transaction fees ($10), and coffee shop work days ($27).

Also I’m going to consider daycare a business expense (in this blog) because I wouldn’t have to pay for it if I didn’t have a business… so $853 (8 days) goes to that. 100% worth it for many reasons. At least I live the FRUGAL ENTREPRENEUR LIFE!

What’s working well and what’s challenging

If you look below, you can see this summer has been some of the lowest-earning months in my 6 years of business… ouch! The majority of my time is being devoted to a course that has YET TO MAKE A SALE (let’s normalize that too, shall we?) and as a result the money is dropping.

Let’s talk about some good thing now!

I am working with Dolly DeLong to launch this course I TRULY BELIEVE IN super well at the end of September (check out her launch planning services).

I also had Michelle Marie Studio help me revamp my brand colors and y’all I’M IN LOVE!

Personal

On the personal side of things, this summer has been AMAZING!

I spent 3.5 weeks in the Midwest at our families lake cabins, we took a trip to Washington wineries, and we ventured with my husband’s college XC team to the Oregon Coast.

I also “successfully” potty trained my daughter. And by successfully I mean she gets her potty in the potty… for those of you who follow me on Instagram you know both my kids have GI issues/ were reflux babies so poop is another story…

LET ME KNOW! For real. This is not a “normal” post for me and I am always a little self-conscious posting these as I am over 6 years into my business and *only* making $1k 😅, but I think it is important to see another mompreneur’s journey!

The main software & tools I use to run my business

I’ve got messy hair and a thirsty heart.

I overshare my life, and have an ultra-expressive personality. Some words people use to describe me are: helpful, real, fun, creative, authentic, and kind.

Elphaba from Wicked is kind of my alter-ego as I am always trying to forge my own path and make a difference in the World, somehow, someway, while also constantly criticizing myself and trying to become the better version of me.

Quality conversations + coffee come easy to me.

I’ve never had an issue connecting naturally with others (probs because I can go on and on about my life story, not that it is interesting, I just process externally, anyone else?!)

I find so much joy in helping and serving others and I give myself fully to whatever it is that engages me, whether that is running a 50k or creating a website in a day.

Love this so much! Love your transparency, Bekah! I’m 4+ years in my business and my numbers look very similar to yours which makes me feel akt better. Like you said— let’s normalize it. I feel like we see too many people talking about their $10k+ months and not enough about those of us making $2 -$5k month (or even on the lower end of that a lot of times!) It’s definitely been a slower last several months for me too— at first I thought it was something I was doing wrong, and I wa so hard dom myself, but the more I keep reading on social the more I’m realizing it’s across the industry, and it’s definitely not just me having the slowest year ever! Which makes me feel a heck of a lot better 😂 Just last week thing have started picking back up for me! Praying that they do for you too this month girl ☺️

    • Rebekah Read says:

Angel, thank you SO MUCH for leaving this encouraging message. I am glad this made you feel better. MANY designers have seen a big drop especially over the summer, so we are definitely not alone. I am hoping September everything picks back up (it usually does). Thanks again ♥
