Keyword Research: The Non-Scary Guide to Get Started Today

I’m so passionate about Search Engine Optimization because it allows me to work 15-20 hours a week and still bring in $45,000 (before taxes) by getting clients. I have blog after blog sharing my strategy (as well as a Squarespace SEO Course) in hopes that you too can benefit from SEO doing the heavy-lifting for your business!

Let’s talk keyword research—the magic behind getting your website to show up when someone Googles “[insert what you do here].” Sounds intimidating? It’s not, I promise. Keyword research is like finding the perfect pair of jeans: it takes a little effort, but once you’ve got the right fit, everything else just works. So, grab your coffee, and let’s dive in because done is better than perfect, right?

First of all, is SEO really worth your time?

Why Keyword Research Matters

Think of keywords as the secret sauce to making Google (and your dream clients) happy. By knowing what words or phrases people are typing into that little search bar, you can craft content that meets them right where they are. It’s how you make sure your website isn’t sitting on page 47 of search results, gathering dust.

Tools You’ll Need (Don’t Worry—They’re Easy!)

  • Google Search: The OG of keyword tools. Start typing something related to your business, and see what suggestions pop up. That’s gold right there.
  • Ubersuggest: Think of it as your keyword BFF. It’s simple to use and great for getting keyword ideas and competition insights. If you’re a visual learner, skip to 24:30 in this video for a quick tutorial.
  • AnswerThePublic: Enter a topic, and it spits out all the questions people are asking. Boom. Instant blog ideas.

How to Do Keyword Research (Step-by-Step)

  1. Start with Your Audience: Think about what your dream clients might be searching for. For example, if you’re a Squarespace designer, they might be Googling “DIY Squarespace website tips.”
  2. Plug It In: Use Ubersuggest (or Google) to see if your idea gets any love. If it’s too competitive, tweak it. Instead of “Squarespace tips,” try “Squarespace tips for small business owners.”
  3. Check the Volume and Competition: Ubersuggest will show you search volume (how many people are searching) and competition (how hard it is to rank). Aim for those sweet spots: decent volume and low-to-medium competition.
  4. Pick Your Winner: Once you’ve found a keyword that fits, write it down. This is your focus keyword for the month.

Make It Work for You

The key to keyword success? Actually using them. Once you’ve picked your keyword, sprinkle it throughout your blog post—title, headers, and naturally in your content. But don’t overdo it. Google (and readers) can spot a keyword-stuffer from a mile away.

Blog Once a Month (You Got This!)

Consistency is queen. Write one blog post a month focusing on your chosen keyword. Not sure where to start? AI tools can help brainstorm ideas and even outline posts. Just remember: your voice is what sets you apart. People don’t just want information; they want your take on it.

I also welcomed 44 new students to my Squarespace SEO Course in 2024 and the majority of those new purchasers were due to my SEO efforts or bundles I was in.

Let’s Wrap This Up

Keyword research doesn’t have to be overwhelming. It’s about showing up, being strategic, and keeping things simple. And remember, done is better than perfect. So, start today, even if it’s messy—because the internet needs what you have to offer.

Now go get after it!

I’ve got messy hair and a thirsty heart.

I overshare my life, and have an ultra-expressive personality. Some words people use to describe me are: helpful, real, fun, creative, authentic, and kind.

Elphaba from Wicked is kind of my alter-ego as I am always trying to forge my own path and make a difference in the World, somehow, someway, while also constantly criticizing myself and trying to become the better version of me.

Quality conversations + coffee come easy to me.

I’ve never had an issue connecting naturally with others (probs because I can go on and on about my life story, not that it is interesting, I just process externally, anyone else?!)

I find so much joy in helping and serving others and I give myself fully to whatever it is that engages me, whether that is running a 50k or creating a website in a day.
