Kauai 4 Day Itinerary 🌴 🌺

Can you do Hawaii for under $3,000? What about if you’re wanting the best Kauai adventures for the active couple? Read on.

It was our goal as young parents of 2 toddlers to make this trip as affordable as possible. We had babysitting taken care of for 4 days so we booked a trip to Kauai for our 7 year wedding anniversary.

We stayed in Poʻipū at the Sheraton – we booked airfare, 4 nights, and a car through a Delta package it was about $2300.

How to Do Kauai for Under $3,000: The Ultimate Guide for Active Couples

Day 1 – Nāpali Coast sunset boat tour

🏃🏼‍♀️We started the day with a run (I suggest the Maha’ulepu Heritage Trail) and then stopped at Little Fish Coffee for acai bowls and smoothies.

We finished our day with a beautiful boat tour of the Na Pali coast. There are tons of tour companies, but we went with Blue Dolphin Charters and they did not disappoint! The food and Mai Tais they provided were great and the staff was exceptional. This will be the biggest expense of your trip (a bit more than $400 for 2) but it is worth it!

Day 2 – hike in Waimea

🌄 Experience driving up the Waimea Canyon to get a glimpse of the Hawaiian Grand Canyon (tons of hikes). We did Awa’awapuhi in Koke’e State Park for the rainforest and ocean views & went to 4,000 ft. to Kalalau Lookout. It’s about 6.5 miles roundtrip and took us 2 hours and 40 minutes.

After the hike I would definitely suggest stopping at Pacos Tacos or drive to Poipu to Anakē’s Juice Bar for an açaí bowl (it is inside the market).

We closed the day at Poipu beach/ Brennecke’s beach at sunset and watched all the turtles come up – this is a great beach to snorkel at as well!

Cheap(er) Poipu dinner options:

  • Koloa Mill Ice Cream & Coffee (ice cream for dinner? Listen, I don’t judge.)
  • Pacos Tacos – fish tacos for Taco Tuesday special
  • Puka Dog (Hawaiian Hot Dog place across the street)

Day 3 – Northside

*note reserve Shuttle/ get permit for ha ena state park

View the Na pali Coast by foot – halalau Trail: Hike the first two miles to Hanakapiai Beach and then up the waterfall (8 miles round trip) end back at Ke’e beach

After we went to Tiki Tzatziki food truck right by the shuttle parking and ate it on Hanelei bay.

The waves were getting big so we headed to Kalihiwai Beach to watch surfing then Kilauea Fish Market for an ahí wrap.

Coconut Market Pavilion was next on our list for the FREE Hula Show with a fire knife dancer (you can see it Wednesdays @ 5:00 p.m.)

Day 4 – Beach/ hotel day

  • Poipu Beach for snorkeling (we rented from our hotel) or Lawai Beach
  • Spouting Horn
  • Lunch at Da Crack Mexican Grinds

Tips to Save Even More

Plan ahead: Book permits for popular hikes (like Kalalau Trail) and pack light for airline savings.

Stock up at Costco: Grab snacks and lunch items on your way from the airport to save on food costs.

Stick to local favorites: Smoothies, açaí bowls, and food trucks are budget-friendly and delicious.

To do next time:

  • Queens Bath (closed, not safe when we went in December)
  • Tunnels Beach (Makua):  good snorkeling spot with lots of marine life and a stunning coral reef. PARKING LIMITED arrive early and park Ha’ena Beach and make the walk to Tunnels.
  • Anini beach for shell hunting
  • Shipwrecks beach to see turtles
  • Hike near us Maha’ulepu
  • Drive Hoopi Falls Trail – 45 minutes
  • Food: we just did açaí bowls and smoothies but these were recommended to us if you’re fancier: Restaurants/Food:

-Kalypso

-Tahiti nui

-The Hanalei Dolphin Restaurant

Lappert’s Hawaii Ice Cream

-Reservation at The Beach House Restaurant in Poipu for sunset dinner one night. Amazing food and the BEST views!

-Keoki’s Paradise (amazing calamari!)

Business takeaways from Hawaii

The further I got into my business, the more I forgot to surprise and delight, but this is something I want to get back to prioritizing.

Sometimes it is the little things that just put a HUGE smile on your face after a long travel day. For example, upon entering our hotel room we had Puka Shells spelling out ALOHA and Hawaiian chocolate.

Another moment when a company went above and beyond was on the boat cruise. We saw dolphins and the catamaran stopped the boat even though that wasn’t part of the plan and messed a bit with their schedule. A goal of mine for 2025? Figure out how to send virtual smiles to the viewers of my website and my clients.
