I’m a part of the summer of SEO series because I’m a contributor for the Systems and Workflow Magic Bundle the SEO edition and on this episode we chat about Keyword Research and why you really need to nail that first in order to get your website on page 1 of Google.

Keyword Research

Let’s debunk keywords and what you NEED to know. We will go over:

  1. What keywords are
  2. How to do a brainstorming exercise
  3. How to decide which keywords to use

What are keywords?

Keywords are the bridge between what people are searching online and then where your website page shows up. It’s a search term or search phrase and you need it to match what exists on your page.

Google crawls your page and looks for these keywords.

Exercise you can do:

Brainstorm what do you want someone to type into Google to land on your website (biz name, services you offer, products you have). Think of variations maybe without your industry jargon.

Go look at analytics on website and see what you are actually ranking for. You can do it in Squarespace analytics or Google analytics. If you have overlap between your list and that then keep doing that keyword phrase.

KEYWORD TOOLS:

Ubersuggest is my favorite because it is SO EASY! Look for a keyword difficulty between 15-35 and a volume above 100 (you want people to be actually searching for it).

Another tip is to simply go to Google and scroll down to see “suggested searches”. Or go to Pinterest or YouTube and see what variants of that keyword phrase people are searching.

Next step:

Create more content (blogging) so you can rank higher for these target keywords. Is blogging dead? Well is Google dead? No. So therefore neither is blogging. Even if you blog only once a month, that is 12 more pages on your website with opportunities to add your keyword phrase showing Google that you are not only an ACTIVE website, but also an expert in that particular field.

WHERE TO ADD THE KEYWORDS:

  1. Text/ copy (Add multiple variations – Google is smart) of your website
  2. Headers (think Hierarchy -H1, H2)
  3. Titles of page or blog posts
  4. Image name/ file name (this is before you upload the image)
  5. When you upload it to Squarespace or Showit it will autofill if you did this, but you can also change the physical name field
  6. Link – not just click here but use the link using Anchor text (Learn more about our Seattle Wedding Photography Services)
  7. URL slug – add keywords but don’t make it too long (blog take out the date, 3-5 words)

Blogging is an amazing way to bring them to your website (Google loves consistency), but you can push it out using my signature PIGFEL system. Also audit your main pages and make sure those are all SEO friendly and adding your keywords to those pages.

ANOTHER BIG TIP THAT HAS HELPED ME:

If you have a services page, think about your main 3 services and create pages for each of those. WHY? That will be a more targeted keyword phrase.

For example “Website in a day” – I am in the 1st or 2nd spot. I am not doing anything anymore to keep myself there, but it is specific enough and I have optimized that page for search engines with that keyword phrase and made it a long sales page (2,000 words ish – if struggling to get there add a FAQ, tell stories, why topic matters/ what it can do for reader) which search engines like.

Just because your page or post is LONG, doesn’t mean it needs to be boring! Make sure it is readable and skimmable by using headings, short paragraphs, bullets, numbers, etc.

How long should I make my page for SEO?

Depending on the study, 1500-2500 words is the average length of a post in Google’s top 10 results.
