Case Study: How Bek Byrne Revamped Her Photography Website in Just One Weekend with a High-Converting Squarespace Template

Bek came into my world interested in my course Beyond The Template. She had a Squarespace website that had showcased her work the past 5 years, but had zero SEO knowledge and wanted guidance on designing her website. She said, “I am literally invisible on Google and live in an area FLOODED with photographers so I’m wanting to fully maximize my SEO. I’m an all or nothing kinda gal”

When you have photos this beautiful, you need a website that truly showcases them AND your personality (because we all know people book you not just for your work, but for your personality and brand!)

Here’s what the website does well: HIGH QUALITY PHOTOS THAT SHOWCASE THE WORK! This is the main thing it does well. It is a great portfolio and I would take it over Instagram any day! The website is very clean and easy to navigate making it super user-friendly. BUT there’s so much more we could do with it (used with permission from the creator).

Areas for Improvement:

1. Hero Section Could Be More Actionable (Conversion)

  • The homepage lacks a clear, bold call-to-action (CTA) in the hero section. While the text “Capturing natural moments of love and connection” is beautiful, it doesn’t directly guide visitors to take the next step (e.g., “Book Your Session Today” or “View Portfolio”).
  • Adding a button such as “Book Now,” “View Pricing,” or “Schedule a Consultation” would increase the likelihood of conversion.

2. Text Overload on “About” Page (Conversion)

  • The “About” page includes a lot of text in a single block. Breaking it up into shorter paragraphs or using bullet points can improve readability and engagement.
  • Adding a secondary CTA at the end (e.g., “Learn More About My Packages” or “View the Gallery”) would help direct traffic further down the funnel.

3. Alt Text for Images (SEO)

  • Ok we’re going to get into the SEO weeds real quick. I grabbed one of the photos and the image file name was “CapturedByBek_Simpkin+Family+2024_8069_240224_highres.jpg”. I am guessing the Alt Text was the same.
  • Alt text is essential for accessibility and for ranking in Google Image Search.
  • Suggestion: Use descriptive alt text for each photo (e.g., “Family photography session on Mornington Peninsula beach”) and change the file name to something like “Mornington_Peninsula_Photography.jpg”.

4. Missing H1 and Meta Tags (SEO)

  • While the site visually uses titles effectively, ensure that each page has an H1 header with the primary keyword (e.g., “Mornington Peninsula Family Photography” for the homepage).
  • Meta titles and descriptions should also focus on click-worthy text that includes both keywords and compelling CTAs (e.g., “Capture Your Family’s Precious Moments – Mornington Peninsula Photographer”).

5. Add Internal Linking (SEO & Conversion)

  • There is an opportunity to link key pages directly within the text. For instance, on the “About” page, mention Families, Newborn, or Maternity and link to those respective galleries or service pages.

6. Blog or FAQ Opportunity for SEO

  • If not already included, consider a blog or FAQ section to target more long-tail keywords. Examples:
    • Blog: “5 Tips for Preparing for Your Family Photo Shoot”
    • FAQ: “What to Expect in a Newborn Photography Session”

7. Speed Optimization (Conversion & SEO)

  • Squarespace sites with heavy image galleries can sometimes be slow to load, which affects both SEO rankings and user experience. Ensure:
    • Images are compressed for web.
    • Lazy loading is enabled to prioritize images visible in the viewport.

8. Social Proof (Conversion)

  • Adding a testimonial section or showcasing more client reviews directly on the homepage or other key pages could further boost conversions.

“THANKS SO MUCH BEKAH! I have great news!! I’m ready to launch! I am well known as a ‘go-getter’ and I got it done—loving my new website. Thanks so very much for all of your help.” —Bek

What Bek did to her website/ her action plan:

In a little over a week she took the new Squarespace template I provided, added strong CTAs throughout her site and made the home page more compelling by including social proof, a section about her, and clear terminology as to what sets her apart.

She also focussed on her SEO and did the following:

  1. Optimized alt text for all images.
  2. Ensured meta titles/descriptions and H1 headers are keyword-rich and unique.
  3. Added a FAQ to target additional keywords and provide helpful content for users.
  4. Compressed images to ensure faster loading times.

If Bek, a homeschooling mom of a 3 and 7 year old and business owner, can design her new website in just over a week (she had the bulk of it done in a weekend), you can too! (SEE THE RECEIPTS/ TIME STAMPS BELOW!)

how to make your website convert for sales

I’ll be doing this masterclass LIVE on March 5th! I would LOVE for you to join me (I will also be giving away some *EXCLUSIVE* bonuses).

I’ve got messy hair and a thirsty heart.

I overshare my life, and have an ultra-expressive personality. Some words people use to describe me are: helpful, real, fun, creative, authentic, and kind.

Elphaba from Wicked is kind of my alter-ego (I was a fan LONG before the movie-adaptation - anyone else?!). I am always trying to forge my own path and make a difference in the World, somehow, someway, while also constantly criticizing myself and trying to become the better version of me.

Quality conversations + coffee come easy to me.

I’ve never had an issue connecting naturally with others (probs because I can go on and on about my life story, not that it is interesting, I just process externally...)

I find so much joy in helping and serving others and I give myself fully to whatever it is that engages me, whether that is running a 50k or creating a website in a day.
