How to Find Clients as a Freelancer – Q & A for New Business Owners

Q: How do you find clients in the beginning?

You may hate my answer to this, but you need to put yourself out there. Tell your family, friends, Facebook community, etc. that you started a business. A few quick tips:

  • Just start showing up online, even if it is just BTS of your day. You want to be more than just a business.
  • You don’t need to be an expert, you just need to be slightly more knowledgeable than your ideal client.
  • Learn a new thing every single day. I was an avid podcast listener of The Goal Digger Podcast back in 2018. The landscape is always changing in EVERY business, so continually research.
  • Share tips about what you want to be known for (SEO and Squarespace for me). Remember your knowledge is not common knowledge. It doesn’t need to be groundbreaking.
  • Think of 1 thing you want to teach on, go to answerthepublic.com and search it to see what people are asking about it.

Join a mastermind with your ideal clients. I joined a mastermind full of other new entrepreneurs (who needed websites) and not only gained community and teaching, but also clients!

Just show up and share the journey.

Q: How do I start a business if my industry is very saturated?

It may feel that way, but it isn’t. You are IN the world, so you feel like it is full of people who do what you do way more than your ideal customer does. Also there are tons of consumers, so there is a person for everyone.

Another thing to keep in ming is that even if it is “over-saturated” it is probably over-saturated with people who aren’t great business owners (ghost people, drop the ball, don’t hold up to what they said they will do, etc.). So be GOOD at what you do and you will start getting referrals.

No industry is over-saturated and if you show up with integrity and professionalism, you will STAND OUT!

Q: How do you keep clients?

I always operate from a place of value, integrity, and try to be professional at all times. At the same time, I show MYSELF on social media and on my website (in photos and in the copy) so that people feel connected to me even before working with me.

If your clients know they can trust you, they will keep coming back. I want my clients to know I’m their biggest cheerleader and they have someone they can lean on and they know that. They know I have their back.

Q: How do you not quit when it gets hard?

I have solid boundaries in place. I also have a contract that states EXACTLY what I will do. That being said, I usually go above and beyond. So when a client comes to me frustrated with XYZ, I can always rely on my contract (and the fact that I over-delivered) to feel confident in myself and my business and ask for payment.

What questions do you have about running an online business?

Leave them in the comments and I would be happy to give you my two-cents.

I’ve got messy hair and a thirsty heart.

I overshare my life, and have an ultra-expressive personality.

Elphaba from Wicked is kind of my alter-ego as I am always trying to forge my own path and make a difference in the World, somehow, someway, while also constantly criticizing myself and trying to become the better version of me.

Quality conversations + coffee come easy to me.

I’ve never had an issue connecting naturally with others (probs because I can go on and on about my life story, not that it is interesting, I just process externally, anyone else?!)

I find so much joy in helping and serving others and I give myself fully to whatever it is that engages me, whether that is running a 50k or creating a website in a day.
