10 Best West Des Moines Coffee Shops for Working, Snacks & Kids

Working from home with two little ones sounds dreamy right up until someone is sobbing over the wrong color cup and you’ve got three client revisions due by noon.

1. Barista’s Bouquet (West Des Moines & Urbandale)

My personal perfect. The unique flavors get me every single time, and the whole space just feels good to sit in for a while. If you want somewhere that feels a little special AND lets you actually settle in and get work done, this is my pick.

They also have an adorable little area in the back where your kids can make (fake) flower bouquets, color, and play with chalk on the walls.

Best for: working, treating yourself, and pretending you have your life together.

2. Tous Les Jours (West Des Moines)

10/10. No notes. That’s the whole review. Go.

Best for: when you want zero regrets.

3. Smokey Row (lots of locations)

The location I went to had lots of space, which I loved (even if it was next to a gas station). So much room to spread out, plug in, and grind through a work session without feeling like you’re overstaying your welcome. This is my go-to when I have a real to-do list.

Not a coffee drinker? My cousin is a big fan of Smokey Row’s chai tea lattes!

Best for: heads-down work and long sessions.

4. La Barista Coffee (West Des Moines)

Peak Midwest small-town coffee shop energy. Nothing fancy, and that’s exactly the charm. The food is genuinely good, and the prices? Unmatched. A smoothie for $6 and a slice of coffee cake for $3? Yes please and thank you.

One warning: the cinnamon rolls are the thing here, and they can sell out by 9:30am. So if a warm cinnamon roll is the dream, set an alarm. This is not a drill.

Best for: good food, better prices, and early birds.

5. Mars Café (Des Moines)

Over by Drake, so a little further out, but worth the mention for one reason: the egg pesto breakfast sandwich. That’s it. That’s the pitch. Come for the sandwich, stay for the coffee.

Best for: a really good breakfast sandwich.

6. Grounds for Celebration (West Des Moines & Des Moines)

A cozy little spot with a whole lot going on. They roast their own beans, so the coffee is legit, and they’ve got a real food menu too (think quiche and chicken salad, not just a pastry case). It’s the kind of place you can settle into for a slower morning or an actual sit-down lunch.

Best for: a cozy sit-down and a proper lunch.

7. Friedrichs (West Des Moines, Urbandale & Des Moines)

Solid coffee, always. The catch is seating (at least the one I went to). There isn’t a ton of it, and it was pretty busy when I went, so it’s not where I’d plan a three-hour work marathon. But for a great cup and a quick sit? Absolutely.

Best for: reliably good coffee on the go.

8. Twisted Bean (Urbandale)

Come for the coffee, stay for the acai bowls! You can work all through lunch which is always a win in my book.

9. Mahalo’s (West Des Moines)

Mahalo’s is fine. It’s just not quite the vibe I want when I’m trying to work. BUT. If you’ve got kids in tow, the fun little donuts are an instant win, and sometimes a happy kid and a hot coffee is the entire goal.

Best for: bringing the kids.

10. SweetDude (Clive)

Technically just over in Clive, and I’ll be honest, it’s not my favorite spot to work. It’s a little dark and there isn’t much seating, so I always feel like I’m hunting for a corner. Lovely for a quick treat, less lovely for cracking open the laptop.

Best for: a quiet catch-up, not a work session.

So where do I actually go?

If you need to WORK, Smokey Row and Barista’s Bouquet win. If you want to be delighted, Tous Les Jours, every time. And if you want a cheap, cozy, small-town morning with a cinnamon roll (assuming you beat the 9:30 rush), La Barista has your heart.
